Questions for Growth Groups and Personal Reflection

Read 2 Samuel 5:1-25

As you read the passage or listened to the sermon, what stood out to you, challenged you or stayed with you?

1. A kingdom built on promise (vv. 1–10)

  • ‘God’s promises do not expire’. Ponder this wonderful fact in the light of another great fact stated in 2 Corinthians 1:20.

  • It’s been 2,000 years since Jesus promised to return. How does 2 Peter 3:1–10 help Christians keep trusting that He really will?

2. A kingdom established for the people’s good (vv.11-12)

  • David is made king of Israel, ‘for the sake of Israel’ (v12b). How did Christ view His work? See Mark 2:17; 10:45

  • Is ‘for the sake of others’ the way you view your parenthood, your authority at work, your position in church, or whatever responsibility God has entrusted to you?

3. A kingdom marred by compromise (vv.13-16)

  • Where might we be in danger of letting the culture shape us rather than the Word of God?

  • How does Jesus as our perfect leader help us?

4. A kingdom defended and protected by God (vv.17-25)

  • When recently have you experienced the Lord’s protection by following guidance from the Scriptures?

  • Where have you seen His powerful hand at work caring for you?

  • How does knowing God as the “Devastator” and “Warrior” help us?

Spend some time praying about the above.
